Private dental care at Essex Family Dental

You may be surprised to learn that private, or independent, dental treatment is much more affordable than you think. For example, an independent dental check-up with a private dentist at an Essex Family Dental practice costs just £9.10 more than an NHS appointment. That means that for the price of just two coffees, you’ll get a longer appointment and will have the option to be seen on the same day without the need to wait on an NHS patient waitlist, all as part of our premium private service.

What’s the difference between seeing a private dentist at Essex Family Dental vs NHS dental care?

Many people wonder if there’s any benefit to paying for dental treatment that could otherwise be undertaken with the NHS. There are many reasons why you may opt for independent dental treatment over NHS treatment, or elect for a combination of both.

The first point to consider is pricing; while all British citizens are eligible for dental treatment on the NHS, the majority of patients do still need to pay a certain amount for these treatments as the NHS only provide a small subsidy. Only individuals who meet specific eligibility criteria can receive free treatment, such as:

  • children under 18
  • anyone under 19 who is in full-time education
  • those who are pregnant or gave birth in the last 12 months; and
  • individuals on particular government benefits and their dependents who are under 20

Treatments for all other patients are only subsidised by the government and the patient is therefore required to pay a specific amount themselves, the exact amount of which depends on the treatment category. For example:

  • a check-up with an x-ray costs £27.90
  • an extraction costs £76.60; and
  • a crown or denture costs £332.10

With private dental care you’ll be required to pay for the specific treatments you receive but this might not be as costly as you expect, with pricing for some treatments not much more than the NHS price. For example:

  • a check-up costs only £9.10 more at £37
  • a small white filling costs only £43.40 more than an NHS metal filling at £120; and
  • a tooth extraction costs only £73.40 more at £150

However, despite not paying much more for private treatment, as an independent patient you’ll receive an elevated service that, for some treatments, includes digital diagnostics as part of the price.

Another reason to choose private over NHS care is due to the breadth of treatments available. Under the NHS you’re limited to basic treatment options such as metal fillings instead of white, whereas you’ll have better choice with private care. Additionally, under the NHS you’re only able to receive treatments that are deemed medically necessary. If you require an aesthetic treatment like teeth whitening, veneers, composite bonding etc., then this would not fall within the NHS offering and would only be available independently. You would, however, have the option to mix and match between private and NHS care – you could, for example, have your check-ups and x-rays under the NHS and then follow the independent care route for additional treatments like veneers

Most of these treatments are also available with 0%* finance options to help you manage your budget so, in many cases, private dental care is the optimum choice.

And further to this, many choose private care because they value the elevated experience that comes with independent treatment; you’ll enjoy longer appointment times and a choice of dentist without the need to wait on an NHS waiting list.

Have you considered a dental plan?

The best treatment options without waiting for NHS appointments. Regain control over your oral health through our dental plan with regular dental check-ups, x-rays and hygienist appointments, all for a manageable monthly fee.

Why are NHS appointments not always available?

Even though Essex Family Dental is an NHS dental provider you may, on occasion, find that there are no NHS appointments available. We understand that this can be frustrating. So why does this happen? Each of our practices have a contract with the NHS to complete an agreed number of NHS dental treatments within a year. Once those treatments have been completed, the NHS will not pay for any additional treatments we carry out within that period, which leaves us unable to continue treating patients under the NHS framework. Thankfully, with private dentists and independent care available at Essex Family Dental, our patients always have treatment options available to them to ensure their dental care can continue.

Are digital diagnostics available to independent patients?

Yes, in fact digital diagnostics are only available privately and are often included as part of the treatment price, which simply adds to the elevated service you’ll enjoy as an independent patient.

Can I manage my private care through a dental plan?

Yes, at Essex Family Dental we offer dental plans via subscription. A dental plan is a private subscription service that enables you to split the cost of your annual dental treatments into a manageable monthly payment. Depending on the plan you opt for, you’ll be able to undertake a set number of items over the course of the year and you’ll be given the choice of when to have your appointments, which private dentist you’d like to see and the Essex Family Dental clinic you wish to subscribe to. I saw Dr Foliades for my 6 monthly checkup. The service (appointment booking and treatment) was efficient, as always - and they still treat NHS patients. I would have no hesitation in recommending this practice to others.

I have been attending this dental practice since I was a baby. I have known the reception staff since I was around 11 years old, so I always feel welcomed when I arrive. The reason I have stayed loyal to this surgery is because it's consistent with providing top care for me over these past 40 years. The staff are always kind and caring, and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Highly recommended

Have you thought about?

A dental plan or a smile makeover with dental cosmetic treatments such as teeth straightening, teeth whitening, implants or composite bonding.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding

If you’ve been dreaming of the perfect smile but don’t want to undergo any permanent procedures that involve removal of part of the tooth, then composite bonding might be the best solution to bring out the best in your smile. Composite bonding is a non-invasive tooth restoration treatment that changes the shape and colour of your teeth through the application of a tooth-coloured resin onto the tooth’s natural surface, whilst also protecting the integrity of your natural teeth.

Implants

A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. Once placed in the jawbone, it supports a colour-matched porcelain crown to seamlessly fill the gap. Implants offer a strong, long-lasting and natural-looking solution that restores both the appearance and function of your smile.

Frequently asked questions about private dental care

Can I switch from NHS to private dental care?

Yes, you can switch from an NHS treatment pathway to a private one whenever you like, and can swap back again if needed. You’ll be charged for your treatments accordingly.

Do I need insurance to access private dental care?

No. Anyone can see a private dentist. We offer various payment options such as pay-as-you-go, finance plans or membership subscriptions.

Are private dentists more expensive?

Private dental care is usually more expensive than NHS treatment because it often includes a wider range of services and uses higher-quality materials, more complex techniques and technology. That being said, everyone deserves the best heath care, so our practices offer finance options and membership plans to help make private care more affordable.
