Which facial aesthetic treatments are available?

At Essex Family Dental we offer a range of aesthetic treatments that include pebbled chin, bunny line or gummy jaw treatments, anti-wrinkle injections and brow lifts. We also administer dermal fillers such as lip, chin, cheek or jawline enhancements at our practices. Aesthetic treatments can even be used to support against teeth grinding and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

What are facial aesthetic procedures used for?

People undertake facial aesthetic treatments for a variety of reasons. Some want to reduce signs of aging and feel more like themselves again, so they choose facial aesthetics to help lessen the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Others wish to revitalise their look, give their confidence a boost, frame their smile or add some more definition to their face.

In some cases, clinical issues such as teeth grinding or excessive sweating are the driver. Whatever the reason for your interest in facial aesthetics, our doctors are here to discuss your goals and provide sound, medically-based recommendations.

What products are used for facial aesthetic treatments and how do they work?

You’ve likely heard of the popular term ‘Botox’ before, which is a shortened name for Botulinum toxin - a purified protein that temporarily immobilises targeted facial muscles. It achieves this by blocking muscle contractions and causing the muscles to move less, thus resulting in smoother skin.

Where the aim is to address hyperhidrosis, Botox is injected into the problematic areas - the underarm or hands, for example - to block the nerve signals that instruct the sweat glands to become active.

For dermal fillers, a gel made out of hyaluronic acid is used; you may be familiar with the name as it’s also included in a lot of skincare products out on the market. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component found in our skin and lips that hydrates and replenishes the skin. However, as we get older, its natural production slows down and we start to see the effect of age. Wrinkles and fine lines also increase due to sun damage, poor diet and busy lifestyles, all of which cause skin to lose its elasticity.

The process to administer dermal fillers involves injecting hyaluronic acid into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles and achieve a smoother appearance. It can also be used in non-surgical rhinoplasty, the procedure to alter and change the shape of a person’s nose.

Are the results visible immediately?

Some improvements may be noticeable shortly after the procedure, but usually it will take up to a few weeks for your treatments to fully settle and for the final result to be seen.

Will my treatment be permanent?

No. It’s important to note that facial aesthetic treatments are not a permanent solution and will need to be repeated as required, with your doctor’s recommendation.

Is everyone eligible for facial aesthetics?

Here at Essex Family Dental, we believe it’s important for our doctors to carry out a detailed consultation with each patient before administering any facial aesthetic procedures, whether that be for a first-timer or a patient returning for a repeat treatment. Facial aesthetics should only be used to enhance an individual’s natural beauty, which is best achieved when used in moderation and balanced against the specific needs and objectives of the individual. In order to achieve the best outcome and avoid our patients oversubscribing to fillers and injectables, we will advise when there is a need to take a pause in treatments.

Are there any additional benefits to having facial aesthetic treatments?

Yes. According to Dr Edwin Williams, facial aesthetic procedures like Botox can actually help to improve moods. Whilst that may sound like a crazy fact, research has shown that there is a connection between how people look and how people feel. In addition to this, Botox can be effective in relieving tension headaches, although it isn’t a cure.

How much product is needed for each procedure?

The exact amount may differ depending on a patient’s individual need, however, the table below provides an approximate recommendation per treatment area:

Forehead
10–30 units
Crow's feet
5–15 units per side
Glabellar lines
10–20 units
Masseter muscle
20–50 units per muscle
Neck
25–50 units for cosmetic purposes
Chin
2-6 units
Corners of the mouth
3-6 units
Eyebrow lift
2-5 units
Lines around the nose
5-10 units
Gummy smile
2.5 units are recommended on each side

Just had my first ever experience of this dentist and sedation clinic! I can say I was absolutely amazed. I was very anxious to attend due to a previous dentist causing me a lot of pain and leaving my roots behind which caused numerous infections. But all the staff were lovely and understanding that I was anxious. Procedure was done quickly and efficiently. I will definitely recommend this clinic to anyone! Absolutely amazing. Thank you for making my appointment stress free for me!
