A root canal (or endodontic) treatment is a dental procedure that is carried out on an infected or abscessed tooth to prevent it from being extracted, effectively saving it. The treatment involves removing the infected pulp within the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the interior of the tooth and then, finally, filling and sealing it.

Root canals are usually needed if the soft tissue inside the tooth has become infected or inflamed due to deep decay or traumatic injury. Having a root canal treatment can:

As always, your dentist will give you the best advice about your specific oral issues and, if a root canal is required, they’ll talk to you about this and explain the reasons why. However, if you experience any of the following common signs and symptoms, there’s a possibility a root canal may be needed:

You’ll first have a consultation with your dentist. During this consultation they’ll examine your mouth and carry out any necessary x-rays. In some situations, you may need a digital diagnostics scan so that you and your dentist can view your dental anatomy in 3D and see the full extent of any infection. This will also ensure that every issue is clearly visible and accurately identified before any recommendations are made, thus improving the effectiveness and precision of any treatment - so don’t forget to ask your dentist about a CBCT scan! Your dentist will then advise you on the best treatment plan for you and will talk you through what’s required and what you can expect.

No, a root canal isn’t normally painful as your dentist will keep you as comfortable as possible by numbing the area using a local anaesthetic.
It’s especially important to look after your oral health while you recover from a root canal, so be sure to keep up a good dental routine of brushing and flossing as usual. The treated tooth may feel a bit sore for a few days after your treatment, but this is normal and will ease with time; you may find over-the-counter medication to be helpful to relieve any pain. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it’s fully healed and opt for soft food wherever possible. Your dentist will give you some detailed instructions to aid your recovery, so be sure to follow these as closely as you can.
The appearance of your tooth won’t significantly change after your endodontic treatment and it will work in the same way as all of your other teeth. In some cases, however, discolouration might occur and, if this happens, restoration options will be recommended to you such as having a filling or a crown. If a crown is required to bring back the appearance and strength of your tooth, it will be matched as closely to the natural tooth as possible but the naturalness of this will depend on the type of crown you choose.
